The Washington County Chamber of Commerce is excited to celebrate a significant milestone for the future of our community. After years of dedicated advocacy, the Metro Council has approved the expansion of the Urban Growth Boundary (UGB) for Sherwood West. This pivotal decision unlocks 1,300 acres of land for development, paving the way for balanced growth, new homes, jobs, parks, and natural spaces.

A Win for Economic Development
This expansion represents a critical step toward addressing the need for industrial and employment land in Washington County. With low industrial vacancy rates, the lack of space within the Metro boundary has been a growing challenge, driving businesses outside the region and increasing sprawl and greenhouse gas emissions.

The addition of new industrial land will provide opportunities for advanced manufacturing—a cornerstone of our regional economy. These developments will generate family-wage jobs, support public services like schools and parks, and enhance our region’s competitiveness for major investments.

Addressing the Housing Crisis
Sherwood West’s concept plan reflects a thoughtful approach to growth, incorporating diverse housing options to meet the needs of a growing and changing population. From affordable options for first-time homebuyers to homes for retirees, this planned housing mix ensures inclusivity and provides opportunities for all.

Balancing Growth and Sustainability
This expansion doesn’t just address economic and housing needs—it also aligns with sustainability goals. By creating space for growth within the Metro boundary, we can reduce sprawl and promote environmentally friendly development practices.

Our Role in Advocacy
The Washington County Chamber has been proud to support this initiative. In our March 2024 letter to Metro, we highlighted the critical need for this expansion to create opportunities for our diverse community. By advocating for a shared vision of balanced growth, we’ve helped ensure that Sherwood West will become a vibrant community where residents can live, work, and thrive.

Looking Ahead
The approval of the Sherwood West UGB expansion is a victory not only for Sherwood but for all of Washington County. It’s a step toward a brighter future, built on a foundation of economic opportunity, housing accessibility, and environmental stewardship.

We extend our gratitude to everyone who joined us in advocating for this important milestone. Together, we’re shaping a prosperous, inclusive, and sustainable future for our community.
