In a powerful demonstration of unity and common sense, Oregonians decisively rejected Measure 118, the largest proposed tax increase in the state’s history. More than 70% of voters opposed the measure, which would have imposed a gross receipts tax on businesses and driven up the cost of living, hurt family-run enterprises, and reduced opportunities for hardworking residents.
This resounding defeat marks the second time in under a decade that Oregonians have opposed a regressive gross receipts tax, following the 2016 rejection of Measure 97 by 59% of voters. The Washington County Chamber of Commerce proudly stood with a diverse coalition, including businesses, unions, think tanks, nonprofits, and elected officials, to inform and engage the public about the detrimental impacts of Measure 118.
“The widespread and bipartisan coalition that came together reflects the deep flaws inherent in Measure 118,” said Angela Wilhelms, president and CEO of Oregon Business & Industry and chair of the Defeat the Costly Tax on Sales campaign. “Oregon voters have shown once again that they will not be swayed by measures that promise short-term gains at the expense of long-term economic health.”
Led by Oregon Business & Industry, the coalition conducted an extensive, fact-based campaign to highlight the adverse effects of the proposed tax. Through the voices of small business owners, farmers, medical professionals, and others, the campaign illustrated how Measure 118 would raise costs for consumers and strain essential services. This message resonated strongly with voters, emphasizing the potential consequences for businesses and communities alike.
The Washington County Chamber of Commerce extends its gratitude to everyone who contributed to this vital effort—from local business leaders and organizations to community members and elected officials. This outcome reaffirms the collective resolve of Oregonians to protect economic stability and foster a business environment that benefits all.
As we move forward, the Washington County Chamber of Commerce remains committed to advocating for policies that support the prosperity of our members and our community. Thank you, Oregon, for standing firm against this costly tax on sales.
